“Environmental Entities” is a term for mountains, rivers, trees, and other natural beings who have been granted legal personhood by human governments. Legal personhood affirms their intrinsic rights and self-sovereignty and, importantly, provides protections and allows standing in court when those rights are violated. They are one part of the burgeoning Rights of Nature movement.
Environmental Entities sentience and rights exist regardless of whether they are recognized by human governments. One does not have to believe in plant consciousness or be perceptive to plant communication to support these movements. Returning the Land to itself is a crucial component of global sustainability and climate justice, as it protects the biodiversity, carbon sinks, and clean water on which our interconnected ecosystems rely.
